Exploring Sounds, Images and Narration Through ArtsSmarts Project

Grade 11 and 12 Blackville School students in Media Studies 120 had an opportunity to explore the impact that sound and images have on narration through a provincially funded ArtsSmarts Project this spring.

Artist Andrea Watling travelled from Bathurst, and in five sessions she helped the students explore the effects that sounds have on narration.

The students also considered the impact of images, and Mrs. Watling encouraged the students to consider what would be the best way to visually create the stories they decided to share in their final products. Some students did photography, while others created different types of artwork.

In their self-assessments, students shared what they did differently or what they did that they never did before. Some of the students mentioned how they experimented with different subject material and considered various camera angles and points of view.

Other students noted that recording their own sounds to use for a school project was something they have never done before. The editing process along with video production were new learning experiences for some of the students.

A few of the students who are in grade 11 plan to do a similar project with younger students next semester. Part of the money from the grant allowed the school to purchase a computer that is dedicated to the new Media Lab where students can work on audio and video projects.

Below is a collection of most of the work the Media Studies 120 students completed.
